Drivetrain

Q: When I pedal hard, I get popping and skipping in my drivetrain. What's wrong?

A: Several things could be wrong with your bicycle. First, make sure your shifting is properly adjusted. It should smoothly shift through all gears in front and especially in the back. If it is not shifting properly, you could have a misadjusted derrailleur, a bent derrailleur hanger, or worn cables.

Note: if your derrailleur hanger (the part of the frame that the derrailleur is connected to) is not parallel to the rear wheel, it is bent. Please get it fixed right away! You could destroy a derrailleur, and possibly a wheel, by shifting the chain into the spokes.

If everything seems to be adjusted properly but you still experience problems, you probably have a worn out chain or sprocket set. Bring it in, and we can check them for you and determine if they need to be replaced.

Q: Which is better, GripShift or RapidFire?

A: The answer to this question is rather simple: you decide! Shimano, SRAM, and Campagnolo all make great shifting systems, though each with their own "personality".
