Setting the seat height

Sizing a bike

Sizing a helmet

Q: How do you properly set the seat height on a bicycle?

A: Sit on the seat with one pedal at the six o'clock position. With your heel on the pedal, your leg should be completely straight. The objective is to have a slight bend in your leg with the ball of your foot on the pedal. If your hips waddle while you ride, the seat height is too high. If your knees feel "tight" while riding, try raising the seat a little.

Q: How do you properly size a bicycle?

A: Proper sizing of a bicycle can be rather complicated. By definition, you know that a bicycle is properly sized when it provides the maximum level of comfort and performance for the style of bicycle you are riding.

Road bikes are the hardest to size. Using the Fit Kit we can determine the size of bicycle you should ride before you make your purchase. Generally, for older style bicycle frames (not compact design), you will have between 1-2" of clearance between your crotch and the top tube when straddling the bike. Compact frames come in so many different designs that they are sized more by the top tube length.

The major element in sizing a mountain bicycle is the standover clearance. This is primarily a safety issue... mostly with men. We like to see an individual with 3-4" of clearance on a hardtail mountain bike. For full suspesion, this will sometimes be as much as 6". In some cases this optimal standover clearance is not possible (as when the person has a long torso / short legs). In this situation, you must choose the bicycle that is most comfortable.

For comfort bikes and cross bikes, sizing is almost identical to mountain bikes. Because comfort bikes are so adjustable in stem height, angle, and length, they can often a wider range of riders than mountain bikes.

Kids bikes are easy to size. Pick the biggest one your child can safely straddle. The goal here is to choose a safe size, but one that will also provide some room for growth.

As with most issues, contact us if you have any special questions or just come in and we can size you to a bicycle.

Q: How do you properly size a helmet?

A: Fitting a helmet is rather simple. It should first of all feel comfortable... if a helmet does not feel comfortable, you simply will hate to wear it.

The first thing you should make sure is that the shell fits the head snuggly. Most new helmets include an adjustable retention system which allows you to change the effective diamter of the helmet. This allows some helmets to even come in one-size-fits-most models, like baseball caps. Other helmets come in multiple sizes and you should then choose the one that fits the snuggest without placing pressure points on your head.

Secondly, the straps should be adjusted properly. The main chin buckle should be snug, but loose enough to allow a normal opening of the mouth. The side strap adjusters should be positioned right beneath the the ear.

Take the time to adjust your helmet properly. Not only will you be safer, but you will also enjoy wearing it!
